Star ran, flames dancing around her paws as she raced through the forest blinded by the rage that had built in her heart over the past few months.
Kain had chased her away, telling her she was unwanted, that he had no use for pets, friends, or family. She had given him space, hoping that he would come to his senses. He had continued to push her away and Star had accepted that he had changed and lost all emotions. She had decided then to take a little time away, reconnect with her father’s Kitsune leash, but eventually decided to return, only to find that Kain had taken a pet, Viconia Treclimmer. Star’s heart had broken again and she had let her demonic soul take over. Star had raged, run amuck, and thrown a general tantrum like the youth she was.
Finally, Star had decided to leave Lock Ness. She was furious at Kain, at Viconia, at the ‘unfairness’ of it all. So she let the demon that dwelled within her soul consume her. She ran and raged, flames scoring the earth leaving a trail of destruction in her wake. For years the demon controlled Star, but like with all youth the fire eventually burned out and she fell exhausted, into a deep slumber where she battled to regain control of herself from the demon.

Star woke up exhausted and confused. She was filthy, her claws caked with blood and dirt. The air smelled nothing like the Loch, her home. A flash of demon fire crossed before her eyes and she finally remembered where she was and how long she had been away. She had given into her childish whims and let the darkest part of her soul rule.
With disgust at herself she stood and followed her nose to find a fresh pool of water. First, she needed to get clean, hopefully after she could figure out what she would do from this point forward. The smell of death burned her sensitive nose. The darkest part of her soul may crave the smell of destruction, but the rest of her detested it.
As she approached the water a second smell reached her nose, another Kitsune. Her body froze for a second, old instincts rearing their ugly head. She sighed and let herself relax. The smell was that of an elder, not a leash leader.
An old golden nine-tailed spirit fox was sitting on a rock by the stream. Her eyes a milky white color and her skin nearly paper thin.
“Hello wise elder, I hope I am not encroaching on your territory. I was just looking to refresh myself before I moved on.” Star called to the fox elder to let her know she was there.
A grin spread wide across the old woman’s face. “Oh no child, you are not trespassing. I am but a visitor here just as you are. Actually I have been waiting on you to clear your head for a while, foolish kit.”
Star sputtered but held her tongue. She was a kit to the elder and most other foxkind. She sometimes forgot just how young, since she rarely was around other’s of her kind. Young Kitsune’s were required to leave their parents and strike out on their own when they earn their third tail, around 300 years old, and were not acknowledged as full adults until they had earned their fifth tail, around 500 years old.
“Might I ask why you have been waiting on me? Spirits typically try to avoid demons.” Star moved slowly, continuing her way to the water. The elder didn’t seem to mind her presense and she truly wished to get clean. The elder wouldn’t mind… she hoped.
The elder’s smile softened and nodded her head, seeming to read Star’s mind. Which might not be too far from the truth, nine tailed spirits were strong and had many talents. Star unclasped her sword and set it down then sat down working to remove her boots.
“Hum, true, but for you child I will make an exception. Your mother was a pupil of mine many many years ago. Your spirit might be dark like your father’s but Sasha is still a part of you.”
Star’s throat tightened at the mention of her parents. She hated that she had not reconciled with them before their passing. Her ears flipped back, she refused to look back at the elder as she continued to disrobe and prepare to wash away the reminder of her loss of control. “Thank you, but Sasha gave up on me long ago. I hope you have not been pulled away from your leash just to follow me around.”
The elder shook her head “No kit, you are still your mother’s daughter. I come with a message though. It is time for you to work on your fifth tail, go home girl, this is no place for you. You will never earn your tail here in the forest chasing the dark places of your soul.”
Star paused in her movements. What did the elder mean, go home? What home? She had no home, her leash was gone, her parents were gone, Kain didn't want her, she had no where to go. When she looked towards the old Kitsune only a smoking circle remained. The elder had vanished in a spark of flames.
“Typical spirit. Say what you want, then run away.” She huffed as she finished removing her clothing and waded into the cool pond.
For years, she had let her rage consume her but it had fully burned out. Dare she return to the only place that had ever felt somewhat like home? Kain maybe there, or he may still be gone with his pet wandering the lands. The elder had told her to return if she wanted to fifth tail and finally be acknowledged as an adult among the Kitsune leashes.
As she washed the last bit of blood from her hair she made a decision, it was time to go home. Time to truly face the demons. She was not a child, and hopefully soon she would finally earn her fifth tail.
Stepping out of the water, she let the flames circle her, soothing her. The time had come for Star to return, only fate knew what she would find in the Loch, but for the first time in a long time it was not anger she felt when she thought of the Loch, only longing to be home.
